Who can be a mentor?
The mentor program is open to high school sophomores, juniors and seniors who attend one of our partner schools: Jesuit, Ursuline, Bishop Dunne, John Paul II, Cristo Rey, Cistercian, and Bishop Lynch.
The Role of Mentors
Our student mentors play an integral role in both the academic classes and Stepping Out. They assist in tutoring, leading classroom discussions, problem solving, small group work, and have the opportunity to be role models for STAIRS middle school students. Student mentors provide consistent support and guidance as well as a positive academic and social influence. Good mentors listen well, engage in constructive relationships with STAIRS students and reinforce STAIRS students' success, helping each child achieve increased confidence and educational success.
Working closely with high school mentors allows the STAIRS students to see a personalized account on what life is like at each school. The students begin to see familiar faces when they visit prospective high schools, which makes them feel comfortable and confident.
